We’ve already uncovered what was behind our this year’s premiere presence at the IDS (Interior Design Show Toronto). Our goal was simple, yet ambitious trying to push the boundaries what’s possible with bespoke furniture. We were inspired by the organic world around, which we decided to express in dramatic shapes and luxurious textures of the three featured pieces. We are on the way to use the creative freedom to exceed the expectations of all the design lovers, but first, our clients.
Every piece: A Bent Wood Coffee Table, Copper Inlay Dining Table and a Whisky Credenza with naguri texture and stone top demonstrates a different strength of our craft. Together, they formed a unified statement: If a designer can imagine, we can build it.
Crafted entirely from white ash, this coffee table celebrates the expressive potential of bent wood. White ash was chosen not just for its beauty, but for its flexibility. A critical trait for the bent lamination techniques we used.
This wasn’t a design we could model in CAD. Instead, we built a physical scale model of the tabletop and experimented with bending thin veneer strips by hand. The result is a base that feels alive: Natural, flowing, and unlike anything we’ve made before.
Creating it pushed us technically, too. We’ve had to develop custom jigs, fixtures, and vacuum bags to shape the legs. The design was inspired by leading-edge European furniture makers, and we’re proud to bring this organic style into the North American design landscape, where it’s still largely unexplored, adding the Pompous Fox signature style to it.
This red oak dining table, finished in a rich, dark brown stain, may appear simple at first. But a closer look reveals its quiet sophistication. Along the perimeter of the tabletop runs a band of copper leaf inlay. A warm, unexpected twist compared to the gold leaf often seen in high-end furniture.
Why we chose red oak? It’s an overlooked species, the one that can be elevated with the right design decisions. The inlay brings a touch of luxury, and the curved L-shaped base, constructed using a stave method similar to barrel-making, adds a sense of levity and lightness. Each base is sculpted by hand, giving the piece a natural softness that balances its bold, open form.
This table belongs in a home that values design. It’s a statement piece, one that sparks conversation and brings warmth and sophistication to any dining room.
The Whisky Credenza is a technical and artistic showpiece. Made from white oak and topped with a slab of quartzite, it speaks to the modern trend of integrating stone into wood furniture. A detail growing in popularity amongst designers.
A defining feature of this bespoke credenza is the naguri texture applied to the front and side panels. It’s a traditional Japanese woodworking technique first shaped with a power carving wheel and then refined by hand. This textured surface catches the light beautifully and invites touch, adding both visual depth and tactile richness to the piece.
The curved, solid wood doors on each end were by far the most challenging element. At one point, we weren’t sure they would work. Shaping them to curve perfectly and still function as doors took immense skill and patience. But the final result is seamless.
With Whisky Credenza, we demonstrate how far custom furniture can go: From materials to mechanics to aesthetics, there’s no limit when creativity and precision craftsmanship at Pompous Fox come together.
Each of these pieces is distinct, but all share one purpose: To highlight the versatility of custom furniture. Whether it’s incorporating complex textures, elevating common wood species, pioneering new sculptural forms, or incorporating hi-tech functional elements, we want designers and clients to know:
At Pompous Fox, we can build what you imagine.
We were overwhelmed by the positive response at the Interior Design Show (IDS Toronto). You admired the artistic form of the Bent Wood Coffee Table, the elegance of the Copper Inlay Dining Table, and the craftsmanship in the Whisky Credenza. For us, this response means a commitment not just to create what’s expected, but to push boundaries of what’s possible in custom furniture.
